Most fundraising operates on a continuous cycle: discovery, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship … morphing back into cultivation for the next gift. But what happens when you secure a gift that requires decades of stewardship just to maintain it? Legacy gifts provide the ultimate opportunity for a donor to leave his or her mark on an organization, and if not stewarded properly over generations of fundraisers, can be reduced or even lost completely. This session gives attendees an opportunity to learn how best to steward legacy gift donors, with an emphasis on the fact that the professional securing the gift likely will not be the professional on staff when the donor’s gift is realized.

Presented by Lisa M. Chmiola, MS, CFRE, CSPG

CGP National Board Member & AFP Global Committee Member

Lisa is Founder & Chief Fablanthropist. Lisa has more than 21 years of professional philanthropic development experience. An unexpected layoff led her to make her dream of serving as a consultant to colleagues a reality. Her experience includes working with organizations in the education, healthcare, religious, and cultural sectors. She’s served as an active volunteer for a variety of nonprofit organizations for more than 35 years, starting as a Girl Scout in elementary school (and cookie seller supreme!).

Currently, Lisa is actively involved with the Association of Fundraising Professionals (as chair of AFP Global’s U.S. Government Relations Committee and a member of the Baton Rouge Chapter board), and the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners (board member 2021-2023, Chair of Emerging Professionals Committee). She’s also a Junior League of Lafayette sustainer, a member of Ellevate Louisiana, and a graduate of several leadership development programs.

An AFP Master Trainer since 2014, Lisa has presented at four AFP International Conferences, and a variety of AFP and other industry association regional conferences, chapter meetings, and webinars. She also serves as an adjunct instructor in the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Department of Communication, and teaches for Rice University’s Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership. Additionally, she has co-authored several pieces for AFP’s Advancing Philanthropy magazine. Prior to her philanthropic career, Lisa worked in public relations, and as a reporter/copy editor for the Houston Chronicle.
